TRANSFORMATION IN THE PERCEPTION OF ART:

WORK OF ART IN TRASH

Meltem Yakın Üldes

ABSTRACT: Today, while the direct relation of art with capital is often questioned and righteous doubts emerged on what remained about art, artist Efe Işıldaksoy, with his project called ‘All Confused’, make us review the criteria on the “value” of art object and artist.

ıldaksoy leaves a painting which he drew during the day in the trash of a neighbourhood at a certain hour in the evening. The artist shares the location of the painting and the trash can through social media to enable interested people to take his works of art from the trash can. In this manner, opposing the ‘art object as a commodity of investment element, Işıldaksoy creates works of art which lose their value by being thrown out to trash can, yet which thousands of people competed to have contrary to expectations.

Besides, by inviting people to share their own creations likewise, he includes them in his project. Thus by excluding the project from the sovereignty of a single artist, he achieved to create a collective work on the basis of unrequited sharing and an interaction which brings the creativity of people to light. Işıldaksoy’s project causes the conditions determining the value and respectability of art/work of art/artist, the relationship and the distance of art with society, the limits in present day’s ‘glorified art’ concept to be questioned again.
